How to Choose

Signs You May Need Each Level

Outpatient Therapy

Flexible weekly support

Outpatient therapy fits into your existing life — designed for those with manageable symptoms, a stable environment, and the bandwidth to do meaningful work between sessions. The right fit when you need consistency, not containment.

This includes

  • Manageable day-to-day symptoms
  • Stable, safe living situation
  • Stepping down from higher care
  • Growth, insight, or relationship work
  • Maintenance after intense treatment
IOP / vIOP

Structure without stepping away

Intensive Outpatient adds clinical structure several times a week while you continue to live at home. Ideal when weekly therapy is no longer enough but residential care would be more than you need.

This includes

  • Symptoms impacting work or school
  • Weekly therapy is not enough
  • Stable enough to live at home
  • Stepping down from PHP or RTC
  • Skill-building and peer support
PHP

Daily clinical support

Partial Hospitalization is the most intensive outpatient option — full days of programming, five days a week. The bridge between IOP and residential when daily clinical oversight is what keeps you stable.

This includes

  • IOP is not stabilizing symptoms
  • Acute symptoms needing daily care
  • Stepping down from residential
  • At risk of hospitalization
  • Complex co-occurring needs
Residential (RTC)

24/7 structured care

Residential treatment provides round-the-clock structure in our 6-bed adult home. The right level when home is no longer a safe container and outpatient levels have not been enough to stabilize.

This includes

  • Cannot safely manage at home
  • Outpatient levels were insufficient
  • Active SI not needing hospitalization
  • Need 24/7 supervision and support
  • Stepping down from hospitalization
Common Questions

Level of Care FAQ

What is the difference between IOP and PHP?2026-05-25T12:34:16-07:00

IOP meets 3–5 days per week for approximately 3 hours per session, allowing more schedule flexibility. PHP is more intensive — 5 days per week, 5–6 hours per day. PHP is appropriate when IOP is not providing enough structure, when stepping down from residential, or when symptoms require daily clinical attention and monitoring.

When is residential treatment necessary?2026-05-25T12:35:26-07:00

Residential treatment is appropriate when someone cannot safely manage their mental health at home, when outpatient levels of care have been insufficient, or when they need 24/7 structure, supervision, and support to stabilize. It is not a locked or hospital facility — our 6-bed program is a calm, home-like therapeutic environment for adults.

Can I start at outpatient if I have serious symptoms?2026-05-25T12:35:52-07:00

Not always. Our free clinical assessment determines the right starting level based on symptom severity, safety, daily functioning, and support systems. Some clients benefit from starting at IOP, PHP, or residential rather than outpatient — even if they prefer a lower level. The right starting point leads to better outcomes.

Can I do vIOP if I live outside Los Angeles?2026-05-25T12:36:17-07:00

Yes. Our Virtual IOP (vIOP) serves clients throughout our service area via secure telehealth. Contact us to discuss availability in your location. In-person IOP and PHP are based at our Los Angeles facility. Residential treatment is only available in Los Angeles.

Does insurance cover all levels of care?2026-05-25T12:36:39-07:00

Most major insurance plans cover all levels of care — outpatient, IOP, vIOP, PHP, and residential — subject to medical necessity criteria. Our team verifies your specific benefits before you commit to any program, so you know exactly what is covered before you begin.
